The Original
Brownsville Old Timers Family Day
The History of
Brownsville Old Timers Day

In July 1963 residents of Brownsville, a family-orientated neighborhood located in Brooklyn, New York, planted the seed of what is now known as Brownsville Old Timers Day. The first Brownsville Old Timers Day proved to be a huge success that soon became an annual event that included Friday Fish Fry, Concert Series, and Saturday baseball and basketball games.
Originally, the day was planned as a day for the baseball teams from Floogie’s Bar, owned by Alfred Stevens, and Pincus Bar, owned by David Pincus, to play a “bragging rights” competitive game against each other. This first game was modeled after the 1963 NY Mets and 1963 NY Yankees Old Timers Day games. This inspired the Committee to name this event Brownsville Old Timers Day, which was held at the P.S. 66 Park (pictured above) on Saturday, July 27, 1963.
The tradition will be continued this year by the following surviving original members: James O. Johnson “Moe,” Stacey Irvin Hines, William (Bill) F. Green, and John Woody. Nearly 60 years later many present and former Brownsville residents continue to set their summer calendar to attend Brownsville Old Timers Day, this year on Friday and Saturday, July 29–30, 2022.
